About The Colectivo Los Ingrávidos Collection

Video Data Bank is pleased to offer over 190 titles by Colectivo Los Ingrávidos. Colectivo Los Ingrávidos (Tehuacán) is a Mexican film collective founded in 2012 to dismantle the commercial and corporate audiovisual grammar and its embedded ideology. The collective is inspired by the historical avant-gardes, and their commitment to using both form and content against alienating realities.

The Collective’s work features an assortment of visual styles and formats, and combines analog and digital mediums to produce compelling images and soundtracks. Much of their work disrupts historical narratives and addresses political action, including decolonization and social protest; their films reexamine collective memories and histories of patriarchal and capitalist regimes. Other themes such as Mesoamerican religious subject matter, philosophical meditations, and observations of the natural world, are woven throughout their films.

Colectivo Los Ingrávidos Subcollections

The Collective has provided a conceptual grouping of their films and videos as an entry point for new audiences. Some groupings are works that are in direct communication with one another such as The Sun Quartet and The Batalla Trilogy. Others fall more loosely into groupings of similar ideas, or as philosophical and audiovisual explorations. These subcollections are provided in the following listings:

The Sun Quartet

The Sun Quartet is a solar composition in four movements, a political composition in four natural elements, an audiovisual composition in four bodily mutations: a sun stone where youth blooms in protest, a river overflowing the streets, the burning plain rising in the city. And, finally, the clamor of the people that shook Mexico after the night of September 26, 2014. The disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa opened a breach in the Mexican political body.

The Sun Quartet is available as a compilation or as individual titles.

The 1990's The New Diagram System (Agitprop)

The audiovisual legacy of the 1990s, the decade that saw the ossification of the neoliberal project, the rise of third-wave feminism, the proliferation of digital media, and even, perhaps, the “end of history": postmodernism; the emergence of internet; the commercialization of gangsta rap, and independent film; AIDS activist; digital cinema; the Gulf War; rave and riot grrrl cultures; reality television; MTV.

They Live

"As a foulness shall ye know Them. Their hand is at your throats, yet ye see Them not; and Their habitation is even one with your guarded threshold." -H.P. Lovecraft

Triptychs

The triptychs evoke the ritualism of Aztec cosmology, and this experience recalls lumbreras – circular excavation holes in archeological sites. Through the obsidian glass we glimpse the celestial dance of the suns and moons as well as the agitation of the countryside and the outburst of the landscape, but it is also the look that the dark obsidian mirror returns to us.
